Do you know 1 in 5 Americans always feels lonely or socially isolated? Do you know loneliness causes health problems, stress and workplace issues? Loneliness has negative effects on the quality of life.
Then the Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper who is just right for him.” Genesis 2:18 NLT
God knows that we are not supposed to be alone. In the rest of Genesis two, God makes animals to be man’s companions. God realized the animals weren’t the right fit for man. He created woman from man and for him. Man was excited!
“At last!” the man exclaimed. “This one is bone from my bone, and flesh from my flesh! She will be called ‘woman,’ because she was taken from ‘man.’” Genesis 2: 23 NLT
Although I love my pets, they don’t hold conversations too well. I need to talk, laugh and hug my family and friends. Reciprocate conversation, have a listening ear. Someone to pray with and pray for. Visit. Eat cheesecake with!
Although billions of people use social media every day, there are millions who are lonely. Social media can not and never will take the place of in person human interaction. Social media is a great tool but contributes to loneliness. Giving people the false sense of community and relationships. We need in person interactions to raise Oxytocin levels which facilitates with bonding and makes us feel safe and lowers anxiety. (I talk about Oxytocin more in my book)
Let’s combat loneliness. If you are lonely you need to be proactive and do something. If you know someone who is lonely, what can you do to help?
11 IDEAS TO COMBAT LONELINESS:
1. Join a church or small group at church. I have been blessed with a sisterhood of ladies from my small Bible study group. It has been transforming!
2. Read the Bible and apply God’s Word to your life.
3. Go to an exercise class or join a gym.
4. Take a weekly social media break.
5. Join a bowling league (my husband and I are on a mixed - doubles league)
6. Go to the library. Most libraries have classes for free or low cost.
7. Visit a park. Hike. Enjoy the sounds of nature.
8. Call and visit family and friends.
9. Be personable and meet new people.
10. Pray for God to send you a friend. (It works! He has answered my prayer for friends.)
Let’s beat this loneliness crisis. God created us to be in relationship with others. Brothers and sisters in Christ, the hands, arms, feet, legs – to hug, walk with, run for and volunteer. To give love, grace, mercy, peace, kindness to all. Assist the broken hearted and lonely.
