does your light shine bright? “This little light of mine, I’m going to let it shine”. Do you remember singing that at church when you were younger? I remember standing in the choir area of St. Matthew’s AME Zion church (shout out to St. Matthew’s AMEZ in Sewickley, PA!) singing that song with other youth in our little choir. It is such a simple song with a powerful message. Although the song was written for children by Harry Dixon Loes in the 1920’s, a music director for the Moody Bible Institute, it’s message is for both young and old.
Is your light shining? Do you stand out in the crowd? Do you brighten up a room with your presence? Do you covet to please God and not the world? Do you seem happier than others? Are you peaceful and bring peace to a situation? Do you speak the truth in love and help others out of their sin? Are you patient, kind, good, loving? Do you not slander others? Do you excel at your work? There is a lot of darkness in this world. It is echoed in TV shows, movies, memes, social media, newspapers, the culture and more. As Christians we are the light. We are human lighthouses. Lighthouses are used as navigational systems for those at sea. Take a moment to meditate on that. We are a navigational system for those who are lost in the sea of humanity. Our lives should point others toward Jesus. When we surrendered our lives, repented our sins, followed Jesus and acknowledged Him as our Lord and savior, His light entered into us! Be a beacon of light at your jobs, in your home, on social media, in the news, on TV, in videos, movies, memes. Be the light in this dark culture. “Let there be no sexual immorality, impurity, or greed among you. Such sins have no place among God’s people. Obscene stories, foolish talk, and coarse jokes—these are not for you. Instead, let there be thankfulness to God. You can be sure that no immoral, impure, or greedy person will inherit the Kingdom of Christ and of God. For a greedy person is an idolater, worshiping the things of this world.” Ephesians 5:3-5 (NLT) “For once you were full of darkness, but now you have light from the Lord. So live as people of light! For this light within you produces only what is good and right and true.” Ephesians 5:8-9 (NLT) This light in us is God’s grace. God’s grace assists Christians to turn from sin, keeps us in the faith, influences our hearts to be pleasing to God, frees us from sin and blesses us. This light sets us apart. Please don’t let Satan blow out your light. God’s light in you is powered by trust in Jesus. Keep trusting and obeying Jesus and Satan cannot blow out your light. I speak the truth in love. If your light is growing dim I pray that you set some time to pray for the Holy Spirit to reveal to you why. Stay reading God’s word every day. Do what His word says. (The book of Ephesians is a great place to start.) Guard your heart. Be intentional what you are reading on social media and what you are posting. The world needs your light. Remember you are not alone. God is always with you. I am here to encourage you, too. You got this. I love this prayer Paul wrote in Ephesians (3:16-19), I pray this over you: “I pray that from his glorious, unlimited resources he will empower you with inner strength through his Spirit. Then Christ will make his home in your hearts as you trust in him. Your roots will grow down into God’s love and keep you strong. And may you have the power to understand, as all God’s people should, how wide, how long, how high, and how deep his love is. May you experience the love of Christ, though it is too great to understand fully. Then you will be made complete with all the fullness of life and power that comes from God.” In Jesus name I pray Amen. Thank you for stopping by She Who Honors!
