The not - so - secret to reverse anxiety and fear.
I have a confession: I am anxious. Two weeks passed since I attended the writers conference and the pressure to submit my proposal and the 50 million other things to market my book is building
Writing this devotional/blog piece is hard. Fear and anxiety strangle me – I have a knot in my chest that won’t leave. My thoughts are mixed up and incoherent… But I still have a little measure of peace and joy in my heart.
I have peace in my heart because I know what Jesus says’ about anxiety, worry and fear. It is up to me to believe, apply, trust and rest in what he says. All these feelings I’m going through is stunting me and my growth in this process that God has planned. I’m letting the feelings control me and not using the power that God has given me. Me and only me – through Jesus – keep moving forward with the task assigned to me. I WILL DO IT!
My Urban Missionary friend I volunteer with always says, “What does Jesus say to do?” That is the not – so – secret to reverse anxiety and fear. I love it! I repeat it to myself on days like today.
Jesus, what should I do about my anxiety?
Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. Philippians 4:6 NLT
Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you. 1 Peter 5:7 NIV
When anxiety was great within me, your consolation brought me joy. Psalm 94:19 NIV
Jesus, should I be fearful?
There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love. 1 John 4:18 NIV
For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline. 2 Timothy 1:7 NLT
Jesus, I need peace.
In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, O Lord, will keep me safe. Psalm 4:8 NLT
“I am leaving you with a gift—peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give. So don’t be troubled or afraid. John 14:27 NLT
I pray that God, the source of hope, will fill you completely with joy and peace because you trust in him. Then you will overflow with confident hope through the power of the Holy Spirit. Romans 15:13 NLT
After reading these verses, I’m feeling a little better. I will meditate on these scriptures with each step forward, renewing my heart and mind. I’m confident in the Lord because he can’t lie, he won’t forsake or fail me (and you, too). I rest in the Lord and his promises and use the power he gives me. Forgive me Lord for doubting your Word. Thank you for forgiving me.
If you experience anxiety, worry or fear sometimes, you are not alone. I pray that God’s peace and power fill your heart. He will free you from all fears and troubles. His ears are open to the cries of the righteous and he will help you. He guards you day and night. (see Psalms 34).
